All cards of the same rarity are not created equal

This is obviously the truth. But until today, I'd assumed that they used some sort of a point system when designing their cards: for instance, let's say they use some sort of a system where a common card is worth 5 points, an uncommon 6 points, rare 7, legendary 8. Start with a template of a 1/1/4. Subtract 1 point for each turn reduced, each hp added, and each damage added...then you get something basic, like the 0-turn assault units you start off with. Special abilities also take off a number of points--flying might make each hp cost twice as many points, for instance.

However, I realized today that if there is a point system, it is more likely divided amongst the factions themselves than the class of the cards. For instance, take Quad Walker and Dominated Hatchlings: both are 3/5/2, both are uncommon...but the Hatchlings have heal 1.

I guess there's no real moral to this--I just thought it was interesting, and worth pointing out.

I guess...as an engineering major, and a lifelong tinkerer, I just like to know how things work.

I'd read somewhere that Magic: The Gathering was created by someone with a PhD in combinatorial mathematics. I might take up a major in designing gaming engines over at UC Santa Barbara, if I can't get into Berkeley for systems software engineering. I think it's fascinating how they balance these games.

How did you find the point system?

There may be a faction-based weight influence to some skills - or there was in the past, at least. For example, Healing. Raiders were bad at it.

1) The Heal All [faction] 1 commanders put Yurich at the bottom of HP
2) Their structures were worse healers (lol foundry)
3) Their units had almost no healers (lol combat specialist)

This probably had to do with the higher presence of Armored cards.

Richard Garfield did have a degree in mathematics, probably helped him weigh killing speeds in the card games he's worked on. I myself like to make custom MtG cards for kicks, it's like the fun you get assembling a deck.
